Yamaha has introduced its E01 electric scooter in Japan, taking an unconventional approach by offering it exclusively through a rental service. The company initially launched an experimental leasing program late last year to gather user data and refine the product. In May 2023, Yamaha expanded its rental service to include the E01 electric scooter.
The E01 boasts a modern design with clear windscreen to reduce wind buffeting and a charging port on the front fascia, flanked by distinctive boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights (DRLs). Below the front apron, there are small dual LED headlights, giving it a unique appearance. The scooter features a sleek tail section and LED indicators on the handlebar, while its ergonomics provide a relaxed riding position expected from a maxi-scooter. However, it is not a step-through scooter, which may slightly affect practicality due to the center spine.
Powering the Yamaha E01 is a 4.9 kWh lithium-ion battery and an 8.1 kW (10.86 bhp) mid-mounted brushless DC motor. Yamaha claims a range of 104 km on a single charge and provides an AC portable charger as part of the rental program, which takes about 14 hours to fully charge the battery from a household socket. The scooter features a fully digital instrument cluster, Bluetooth connectivity for navigation, keyless ignition, disc brakes on both ends, RSU (Right Side Up) telescopic forks in the front, twin shock absorbers in the rear, and a substantial 23-liter under-seat storage compartment.
In terms of availability, the Yamaha E01 is offered for rent exclusively through Yamaha Bike Rental outlets in Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka, and Fukuoka Airport. Riders aged 20 and above with a relevant driving license can rent the electric scooter in these locations.
As for its global prospects, Yamaha is likely to launch the E01 in markets like Europe in the future. Moreover, Yamaha has showcased two electric scooters, the Neo’s and E01, to dealers in India and has registered trademarks for both E01 and EC-05 in the Indian market. While the exact launch timeline remains undisclosed, it suggests that Yamaha is considering introducing its electric scooters in India as well. Pricing for the Yamaha E01 electric scooter is expected to be in the range of Rs 2 lakh upon its launch.
