Zero Motorcycles, the California-based pioneer of 100% electric motorcycles, has just lifted the curtain on its much-anticipated 2024 model line. This release marks a significant expansion of Zero’s already extensive product range and showcases their unwavering commitment to electric motorcycle innovation.
The big reveal took place at the 2023 EICMA Milan Motorcycle Show, and it comes on the heels of over 16 years of tireless development and a remarkable 165 million miles ridden by dedicated Zero owners. Zero’s CEO, Sam Paschel, expressed his pride in contributing to the history of electric motorcycles: “In an industry where every launch from Zero shapes history, we are proud to unveil the latest chapters in our legacy.”
One of the most noteworthy announcements is the streamlining of Zero’s motorcycle frame platforms, leading to the introduction of fresh models for 2024. Formerly, Zero Motorcycles operated with three distinct frame and motor platforms. The FX and FXE motorcycles were built on the smallest platform, followed by the middleweight S, DS, and DSR models. The largest platform was reserved for the SR, SR/F, SR/S, and DSR/X.
Now, Zero is simplifying its lineup by discontinuing the middle tier and introducing new models to replace the previous Zero S and DS motorcycles.
The new Zero S, built on the familiar trellis frame, boasts a larger motor and battery than ever before. With a 51 kW motor combined with Zero’s 14.4 kWh battery pack, it delivers a remarkable 101-mile (162 km) mixed city/highway range. Similarly, the DS model now features the same frame and drivetrain, elevating the entry-level dual-sport offering.
Both the Zero S and DS are capable of reaching a maximum speed of 104 mph (167 km/h). The 2024 Zero S starts at $14,995, while the dual-sport Zero DS starts at $15,995. For those seeking higher specs, the DSR employs the same frame but boasts a larger 60 kW motor and a 15.6 kWh battery pack.
Zero’s flagship models, the 2024 SR/F, SR/S, and DSR/X, feature the top-of-the-line specifications, including the highest power motor with up to 84 kW of peak power, allowing for a maximum speed of 124 mph (200 km/h). These motorcycles also come equipped with the largest battery option, a 17.3 kWh pack offering approximately 116 miles (186 km) of mixed city/highway range.
It’s worth noting that Zero uses a different method of calculating battery capacity compared to most electric vehicle companies, resulting in slightly higher figures. While these models have a rated capacity of 17.3 kWh, 14.4 kWh, and 7.2 kWh, a more conventional calculation using average voltage would yield capacities closer to 15.2 kWh, 12.6 kWh, and 6.3 kWh, respectively.
Zero also offers a lower-power version of the FXE, S, and DS models in markets outside the US, like Europe. These models, with 11 kW of power, comply with lower-level motorcycle license requirements often found in these regions, providing new riders with access to Zero’s electric motorcycles.
Furthermore, Zero’s innovative power limiting feature allows for dealer-installed upgrades, enabling these motorcycles to grow with riders as they attain a higher level of motorcycle license, making them the first A2 license-compliant models from Zero and the first electric motorcycles on the market to enable simple dealer-installed upgrades to A3 license-compliant performance. This impressive range of motorcycles and innovative features positions Zero as a leader in the electric motorcycle industry.
