Unveiling the Tata Sierra Electric Pickup: A Powerful Heavy-Duty Workhorse with a Green Heart!
Tata Motors is reviving the Sierra brand, which was known for its rugged and bold SUV in the 1990s. The new Tata Sierra is set to be an electric SUV, expected to debut in 2025. This revival is in line with the growing demand for lifestyle SUVs and electric vehicles (EVs).
The Sierra electric concept was unveiled at the 2023 Auto Expo, showcasing Tata’s vision for the iconic nameplate. While the electric version is in focus, there’s a possibility that Tata may introduce internal combustion engine (ICE) powertrains for the Sierra as well.
The rendered image showcases a Sierra electric pickup, a variation of the SUV concept. It retains some of the original Sierra’s signature design elements, including the wrap-around rear window, which was a key feature of the original model. However, to accommodate the two extra doors and cargo bed at the rear, certain design tweaks have been made while maintaining the essence of the Sierra’s design.
The Sierra electric concept is based on Tata’s Gen 2 architecture, which is a heavily modified version of the ALFA platform. This platform can accommodate various powertrains and drivetrain options, making it versatile for future developments.
As for the Sierra’s expected performance, specific details about the powertrain and other specifications have not been disclosed yet. However, the Gen 2 architecture allows flexibility in terms of powertrain options. If Tata decides to launch ICE versions of the Sierra, it could potentially offer engines like the 2.0-liter turbo diesel and 1.5-liter turbo petrol units used in other Tata models.
Ratan Tata, the former chairman of Tata Sons, has a special affinity for the Sierra, as its launch in 1991 marked Tata Motors’ entry into the passenger vehicle segment. The revival of the Sierra brand aims to capture the essence of the original while adapting to modern design and technology trends.
