Posted on

The speed at which electric vehicles (EVs) charge plays a crucial role in the overall EV experience, especially during road trips. Edmunds recently conducted an EV Charging Test, evaluating 43 different battery-powered cars based on their charging efficiency in miles per hour. Surprisingly, Hyundai and Kia EVs emerged as the top performers, surpassing even Tesla in the race for the fastest-charging electric vehicles in the American market.

Top Performers:

2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 Limited RWD: The undisputed leader, boasting an impressive charging rate of 868 miles/hour, allowing for rapid charging and minimal downtime.

2022 Kia EV6 Wind RWD: Securing the second position with a remarkable charging rate of 769 miles/hour, the Kia EV6 proves its efficiency in recharging.

Hyundai Ioniq 6 (All-Wheel Drive, Dual-Motor): The dual-motor version of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 takes the third spot with a charging rate of 764 miles/hour, showcasing the prowess of Hyundai’s EV technology.

Noteworthy Mention: While Tesla is a prominent player in the EV market, the fastest-charging Tesla according to Edmunds’ methodology is the 2023 Model 3 Long Range, achieving a charging rate of 569 miles/hour. Other Tesla models, including the 2021 Model Y Long Range and the 2021 Model S Plaid, also made the list but ranked lower in charging speed.

Top 20 Fastest charging EVs

Diversity in Top 10: The top 10 list is notable for the dominance of Hyundai Motor Group’s portfolio, with six models making the cut. The Genesis Electrified G80 claims the eighth position with a charging rate of 588 miles/hour.

Other Contenders: Porsche and Mercedes-Benz also secure spots in the top 10, with the 2020 Taycan 4S claiming the fourth position with a charging rate of 690 miles/hour, and the EQS 450+ securing seventh place with 593 miles/hour.

Methodology: Edmunds calculated the miles per charging hour by dividing the average charging power (in kilowatts) by the tested consumption figure (kilowatt-hours used for every hundred miles traveled, or kWh/100 miles). The results offer a comprehensive view of each EV’s efficiency in gaining miles per hour of charging.

Conclusion: The results from Edmunds’ EV Charging Test highlight the growing efficiency and speed of charging capabilities in the electric vehicle market. With Hyundai and Kia leading the charge, EV enthusiasts can expect more dynamic and time-efficient road trips, fostering increased confidence in the viability of electric mobility.
