“Mahindra Thar Electric: A Silent Revolution on the INGLO P1 Platform”
Mahindra is ushering in a new era of electrification with the introduction of the Thar electric SUV concept. While Mahindra has also unveiled the Scopio N pikup concept and plans to electrify the Bolero and Scorpio, the focus today is on the Thar electric and its transition to an electrified future.
1. A Comprehensive EV Lineup
In addition to the Thar.e, Mahindra has an electrifying lineup that includes the Bolero.e, Scorpio.e, XUV.e, and the BE (Born Electric Range). While the BE models and Thar.e are the highlights, the rest of the range may largely derive from their ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) counterparts to ensure cost-effectiveness and expand the EV portfolio efficiently.
2. INGLO P1 Platform: The Foundation of Transformation
The Thar is renowned for its rugged ladder frame platform and off-roading prowess. However, electrifying ladder-frame vehicles can be a formidable challenge. Rather than attempting to electrify the existing ladder frame, Mahindra has opted for the INGLO P1 platform. This decision allows for the creation of both 3-door and 5-door Thar.e variants with wheelbases ranging from 2,775 mm to 2,975 mm and a substantial ground clearance of up to 300 mm, thanks to the floor-mounted battery.
3. A Box of Utility and Functionality
The Thar.e prototype exudes a military-inspired aesthetic, reminiscent of the TUV300. The boxy design emphasizes function over form and embraces classic SUV DNA. The front grille displays an aggressive and muscular demeanor with square LED DRL signatures, while massive wheels and rugged tires make a bold statement. The flat roof opens up possibilities for overlanding adventures, making it a lifestyle vehicle.
4. Dual Motor Powertrain and Launch Timeline
Both the 3-door and 5-door Thar.e versions will feature the same battery and dual motor configurations. While launch details for the Thar.e are not specified, Mahindra has outlined a phased launch schedule. The XUV.e8 is slated for a December 2024 release, followed by the XUV.e9 in April 2025. The BE.05 is scheduled for October 2025, and the BE.07 is set to launch in April 2026. Thar.e’s launch may extend beyond 2026 or even into 2027.
5. The Power of LFP Cells
The INGLO platform now incorporates Blade and Prismatic cells from BYD, replacing Volkswagen’s MEB platform. The use of LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) cells from BYD aligns with Mahindra’s requirements for the Thar.e, emphasizing its off-road capabilities. Thar.e is expected to feature a 4WD setup powered by two motors, with the front motor delivering slightly less performance than the rear motor.
